Thus, from his insulated situation, he watches as Bolshevism rapidly transforms life in Russia, falters in the face of social, political and economic realities, suffers under Stalinism, and enters the Khrushchev years. Even trapped in a hotel, however, life has a way of introducing the unexpected, and it isn’t long before his daily routine runs into challenges. He’s a man accustomed to rich food, good conversation, romantic dalliances, beaux arts and mischief, and he finds ways to incorporate these in his new life. The count decides he will, after words of wisdom from his father, become master of his circumstances lest they master him. The authorities move the count from his luxury suite to a small room in the attic, and there he must face the years ahead, but how is one to live under such circumstances? There, the count will be unable to harm anyone with his aristocratic values. A Gentleman in Moscow is about Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat whom the Bolsheviks place under house arrest in the Hotel Metropol Moscow in 1922.
